Baijiu is a family of Chinese grain spirits. Its story begins with grain.

Qu is a fermentation starter. It helps turn starch into fermentable sugars and supports fermentation.

Sauce aroma is a style of baijiu. It does not mean sauce has been added to the drink.

Explore HANKOL through its craft, design and stories. Keep your own judgement. Choosing not to drink is always welcome.

THE PERSON
BEHIND THE CONVICTION

Stand behind
your work.

WANG WEI / FOUNDER OF HANKOL

Wang Wei’s story connects making baijiu with a larger ambition: bringing a Chinese craft into conversation with the world.

The founder’s story

In a 2023 interview with Guizhou Radio and Television, Wang Wei described investing in Maotai Town in 2013. He spoke as someone whose interest in baijiu had become a commitment to the work of producing it.

Asked about the shift from confidence in blind tasting to safeguarding quality, he described greater humility, diligence and respect for the craft.

In the same conversation, his explanation of ethical business was practical: be honest about what you do and do the work conscientiously.

These are his stated principles. The meaningful question for any maker is how those principles show up in everyday decisions.

YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER

Know the spirit.
Trust your taste.

HANKOL is a Chinese sauce-aroma baijiu brand with production roots in Guizhou. If you are an adult of legal drinking age and want to explore it, ask a licensed local retailer or tasting host about availability.

What to ask before a tasting

Identify the bottle. Ask for the exact HANKOL product, bottle size and labelled alcohol strength. Confirm the actual local price; this site lists no verified retail offer.

Learn the style. Ask how the host describes sauce aroma, and how this bottle differs from the other spirits being presented.

Make your own notes. Separate aroma, texture and finish. A descriptor helps explain an impression; it does not tell you what you must enjoy.

Keep the choice yours. You can decline, observe or choose water. Never drink and drive. This site does not supply samples or take bookings.

THE LONG VIEW
BEYOND THE MOMENT

Think in
generations.

What will another generation choose to keep?

In his working manuscript Jiangxiang Shiji, Wang Wei changes the scale of the conversation: from annual sales, to the life of a brand, to what might remain decades later.

It is a way of asking what a maker owes the future.

Read the idea behind the page

The manuscript looks beyond short-term commercial results to ask what endures. This page takes that question as an invitation to think about craft, responsibility and cultural memory.

THE FACE
LOOK AGAIN

Close view of the face emblem on the HANKOL bottle
ONE FACE.
LOOK AGAIN.

Look closer.
Judge for yourself.

A face is the first thing you notice. A second shape emerges when you look at what surrounds it.

HANKOL’s published packaging story traces this play of positive and negative space to the founder’s silhouette and the idea of blind tasting.

Why begin with blind tasting?

A name, a price and a reputation arrive with their own expectations. Conceal the label, and you give yourself a different starting point: what you actually notice.

That is a useful question to carry beyond this bottle. Where does your judgement begin?

Blind tasting is a way to explore sensory impressions. It does not establish authenticity, chemical composition or safety.

THE CONVICTIONS
WORDS THAT ASK SOMETHING OF US

Be honest.
Stay curious.

A name on a bottle invites scrutiny. A tradition invites questions. Four principles guide how we tell this story—and how we welcome you into it.

Four principles, in practice
I.

Honesty.

Can you explain what you know, admit what you do not, and resist making a claim simply because it sounds impressive?

SPEAK HONESTLY.
II.

Responsibility.

A maker’s name belongs to more than a label. It belongs to decisions, to the work of other people, and to the willingness to answer difficult questions.

OWN YOUR WORK.
III.

Independence.

A tradition can be respected and questioned at the same time. You are free to disagree with a tasting note, a custom or the person across the table.

THINK FOR YOURSELF.
IV.

Respect.

Hospitality leaves room for a different opinion and an untouched glass. Drinking is never a condition of belonging, courtesy or being heard.

RESPECT THE CHOICE.

05

THE WORK
GRAIN, CRAFT AND ATTENTION

Grain. Time.
Human hands.

HANKOL’s public history places its production roots in Guizhou’s Maotai Town region, close to the Chishui River. Here, baijiu belongs to a landscape of distilling and accumulated practical knowledge.

The field notes explain the fermentation starter and the sauce-aroma style. Read them alongside the brand’s production story to connect unfamiliar terms with the work behind the spirit.

06

THE WORLD
AN EXCHANGE, NOT A MONOLOGUE

From China.
For the curious.

Read the cultural idea

In Jiangxiang Shiji, Wang Wei considers a world with more than one cultural centre. He asks how Chinese spirits might become a cultural choice people make for themselves.

For this journal, that means introducing a place and a craft with confidence, while leaving your judgement entirely yours. You do not need to share a language, a history or a taste to begin listening.

Bring what you know. Question what you encounter. A culture stays interesting when the conversation can go both ways.

Editorial paraphrase: Jiangxiang Shiji, working manuscript version 2.0, PDF page 149.

Card notes identify the chapter or paragraph; these are manuscript accounts, not independently reported interviews.

The time and cultural-choice essays draw on the supplied Jiangxiang Shiji working manuscript, marked version 2.0 (pages 8–9 and 149). Its title is given in transliteration; no official English edition is implied.
